1 Chronicles 12:32  And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

Why were all their brethren at their commandment?

Because they knew what Israel had to do.

How did the children of Issachar know what Israel had to do?

They had understanding of the times.

This is crucial.

These days we often hear of the "signs of the times". But the signs cannot be understood unless we first understand the times.

The tribe of Issachar was the only tribe that understood the times in which they were living.

We should pray to be like the tribe of Issachar. We should ask God to show us His perpective on current events. Clear perspective will lead to clear purpose on what God would have us do.

What are the times in which we are living?

Aren't the times like the Days of Noah? like the Days of Lot? like the Laodicean Church?

What was common to these? Obsession with eating, drinking, "free" sex, money, possessions, prosperity.

These were all consumerist societies.

Today our churches have fallen in line with the consumerist mentality of the times. And these churches think they are rich!

Where it once shaped desires, the church now merely satisfies them.

Where it once dispensed spiritual counsel, it now offers up mere therapy

Jesus has another evaluation that would shock these churches.

Revelation 3:17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

We see that Jesus is so eager to ensure that they understand what He is saying that he uses their idiom ("buy of me gold tried in the fire").

In spite of the graciousness of the Lord, how many of them actually obeyed His instructions?

The appropriate message to the sins of the Days of Noah, the Days of Lot and the churches of the Laodicean Age is:
BE ZEALOUS AND REPENT!
